Der Latente Barock, 2025

Split Art Projects, Vienna 23 September- 2 October 2025 (Scroll down for exhibition text)

How magnificent can a work become? What dimension can it achieve in an aesthetic society in which, on the one hand, rigor and, on the other, abstract design have become the norm? The reverent removal of everything seemingly superfluous often leads to the homogenization of all aesthetic principles. Suddenly, the surprise of a latent Baroque on a homogeneous plane opens up new aesthetic paths and changes our perspective.

Just as the Baroque utilizes the emotional and dramatic element expressed in the movement and vitality of forms, the grandeur and intensity of compositions, so in the latent Baroque we discover a new grandeur and generosity of the image. The artful use of color and shading in painting or the care and attention to detail in sculpture create strong contrasts and expand the space to create compositions without clear boundaries.

Just as the Baroque has embraced the paradoxical, the strange, and the whimsical since the 18th century, the latent Baroque also uses modern media to express a new perspective and dynamically demonstrate its presence in the contemporary art scene.

Six artists from Austria, Greece, and Poland are participating in this Baroque exhibition, demonstrating this new, strange path through their work.
