My practice is rooted in painting as a physical encounter between my body and the material. At its core is an inquiry into the relationship between image and embodiment. I follow the work as it emerges, mutates, and transfigures.
Each body of work begins with source images from art history and contemporary media, or studies of the body, still or in motion. I use these as structures to inhabit, reconfigure, and undo, translating flesh into color and movement. I am interested in the images the body makes when it becomes the instrument of image-making rather than merely its object.
There is always a play between representation and abstraction, between definition and openness. Unruly, fleshy forms swirl, merge, and break apart. The figure is always becoming, at times recognizable, at others absorbed into color and gesture. The relationship of the still, fixed image of painting to time and movement is central to my practice.
Ambivalence and uncertainty are conditions of working. Some pieces are immediate, while others develop over time through repetition, erasure, and layering. In my monotype prints, I work with the ghost image, the residual impression left on the plate, allowing each successive print to carry and transform what came before. My sculptural works expand into the viewer’s space, further exploring the relationship between the image and its becoming a body.
Painting becomes an event where pleasure, vulnerability, and resistance intertwine. I paint what I have not yet seen. I never know where a piece will take me. For me, this is the adventure of painting.
Η πρακτική μου έχει τις ρίζες της στη ζωγραφική ως σωματική συνάντηση ανάμεσα στο σώμα μου και το υλικό. Στον πυρήνα της βρίσκεται μια έρευνα στη σχέση ανάμεσα στην εικόνα και την ενσωμάτωση. Ακολουθώ το έργο καθώς αναδύεται, μεταλλάσσεται και μεταμορφώνεται.
Κάθε σώμα έργου ξεκινά με ένα σύνολο εικόνων-πηγών από την ιστορία της τέχνης και τα σύγχρονα μέσα ή μελέτες του σώματος, ακίνητου ή σε κίνηση. Τις χρησιμοποιώ ως δομές για να κατοικήσω, να αναδιαμορφώσω και να αναιρέσω, μεταφράζοντας τη σάρκα σε χρώμα και κίνηση. Με ενδιαφέρουν οι εικόνες που φτιάχνει το σώμα όταν γίνεται το όργανο της εικονοποίησης παρά απλά το αντικείμενό της.
Πάντα υπάρχει ένα παιχνίδι ανάμεσα στην αναπαράσταση και την αφαίρεση, ανάμεσα στον ορισμό και το άνοιγμα. Ατίθασες, σαρκικές μορφές στροβιλίζονται, συγχωνεύονται και διαλύονται. Η φιγούρα είναι πάντα ένα γίγνεσθαι, άλλες φορές αναγνωρίσιμη, άλλες φορές απορροφημένη σε χρώμα και χειρονομία.
Η αμφιθυμία και η αβεβαιότητα είναι συνθήκες εργασίας. Μερικά έργα είναι άμεσα, ενώ άλλα διαμορφώνονται στον χρόνο μέσα από επανάληψη, διαγραφή και διαστρωμάτωση. Στις μονοτυπίες μου, δουλεύω με το ‘φάντασμα’ της εικόνας, το ίχνος που μένει στην πλάκα μετά από το τύπωμα, αποτυπώνοντας σταδιακές μεταμορφώσεις της εικόνας. Τα γλυπτικά μου έργα επεκτείνονται στον χώρο του θεατή, διερευνώντας περαιτέρω τη σχέση ανάμεσα στην εικόνα και το να γίνει σώμα.
Η ζωγραφική γίνεται ένα γεγονός όπου η ηδονή, η ευαλωτότητα και η αντίσταση συμπλέκονται. Ζωγραφίζω αυτό που δεν έχω ακόμα δει. Δεν ξέρω ποτέ πού θα με πάει ένα έργο. Αυτή είναι η περιπέτεια.
